The Ombetja Yehinga Organisation (OYO) was begun as a project in 2001 and was registered as a Welfare Organisation in 2003 and as a Trust in 2009. HIV/AIDs is a major concern in Namibia, one in five are living with either HIV or AIDS and young people are recognised as being particularly at risk. Faced with these issues and building on the cultural significance within Namibian society of music, song, dance, and drama, OYO strives to reduce the impact of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Namibia, using the performing and visual arts to provide children and young people across Namibia with the knowledge to make informed choices, the ability to protect themselves from HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, the awareness and understanding of their human rights and the confidence to stand up, to have their opinions counted and to affect social change. Since HIV/AIDS are not health issues alone, but interwoven with social, economic and cultural issues, OYO aims to empower children and young people to address these issues, using the arts (performing and visual) to encourage self expression, the sharing of thoughts and ideas, reflective thinking, problem solving and innovation, using information, communication and education (ICE) resources created by and for young people, and by training young people as peer educators and communicators.
